We describe here a test that you can make in the case that you need to be sure that all the hardware of the N2K0183 multiplexer is working without problems. This test checks the operation of the Nmea0183 output port P2, the Nmea0183 input ports P1 and PX, and the CAN bus transceiver. You can do the test using a simple USB cable to power the multiplexer as shown here or you can, instead of the USB cable, supply +12V to the 12V and GND terminals.
If you are not interested or you do not use the Nmea0183 input port PX, you do not need to open the plastic box. You need to connect 2 wires from P2 to P1 (the white and black wires) as shown in this picture:
If you want the test to include the Nmea0183 input port PX, you need to open the box and make the connections shown on the H2 pin header. The connections are GND to BX (yellow wire in the picture) and GPIO23 to AX (orange wire in the picture). Then you press the Hard reset switch and you will see all the Leds to go ON. After 2 seconds the Leds go OFF and then you release the switch as shown in this video:
You will see the red Led near the P2 output to blink followed by:
- the green Led near the P1 input to blink meaning that P1 receives data OK
- the green Led near the PX input to blink meaning that PX receives data OK
- the blue Led near the CAN bus to blink meaning that the CAN bus circuitry is OK
